Carbon tetrabromide can be used as a solvent for fats, waxes, and oils, and in the plastic and rubber industries for blow molding and vulcanization, further for polymerization. It can also be used as a sedative and as an intermediate in the manufacturing of agricultural chemicals. Due to its non flammability, it is a component of refractory chemicals. Due to its high density, it can also be used for mineral separation. Chemical properties: gray white powder. The melting point is 48.4 ℃ for alpha type and 90.1 ℃ for beta type. Boiling point 189-190 ℃, 102 ℃ (6.55kPa), relative density 2.9609 (100/4 ℃), refractive index 1.5942 (99.5 ℃). Insoluble in water, soluble in chloroform, carbon disulfide, and hydrofluoric acid, with a solubility of 3% in ethanol and ether. Used for manufacturing pharmaceuticals (anesthetics) and refrigerants, can be used as pesticide raw materials, dye intermediates, analytical chemical reagents, and for synthesizing quaternary ammonium compounds.
