Soluble in ether, benzene, acetic acid, chloroform, and hot carbon disulfide, slightly soluble in hot water, insoluble in dilute inorganic acids.
2-Phenylindole is mainly used as an intermediate in cationic dyes to produce cationic orange 2GL, cationic red BL, and cationic red 2GL. When used in dye production, it is often first methylated to further produce N-methyl-2-phenylindole. The methylating agent is dimethyl sulfate, which is reacted in a chlorobenzene solvent at 60-65 ℃ with a yield of 83.5%. 2-phenylindole is also used as a heat stabilizer for lotion PVC.
Used as a stabilizer and dye intermediate for PVC glass paper.
