【Chemical Name】Thioglycolic acid

【Chemical Synonyms】TGA ; 2-Thioglycolic acid; Thioglycolic acid

【CAS No.】68-11-1

【Molecular Formula】C2H4O2S

【Molecular Weight】92.12

【Product properties】Pure thioglycolic acid is a colorless, transparent liquid, while the industrial-grade product ranges from colorless to slightly yellow and has a pungent, characteristic odor. It is miscible with water, ethanol, and ether. In hair perming products, thioglycolic acid is used to break some of the disulfide bonds in hair, thereby altering the hair's curl pattern to achieve a waving or styling effect.

【Storage】A dry and well-ventilated place

【Packing】200KG/Drum

【Application】

Thioglycolic acid (TGA) is primarily used as a raw material for felt finishing agents and cold waving lotions. TGA exhibits both the reaction characteristics of carboxylic acids and those of thiols. Among its most important reactions is its interaction with disulfides. In particular, under alkaline conditions, it reacts with cystine in hair, cleaving the (-S-S-) bonds of cystine to form cysteine, which is more easily curled. It is mainly used as a curling agent, depilatory agent, low-toxicity or non-toxic stabilizer for polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polymerization initiator, accelerator, and chain transfer agent, and metal surface treatment agent. In addition, thioglycolic acid is a sensitive reagent for the detection of iron, molybdenum, aluminum, tin, etc.; it can also serve as a crystallization nucleating agent in polypropylene processing and as a modifier for coatings and fibers, as well as a felt finishing agent.

It is an intermediate in the production of pharmaceuticals such as tiopronin (captopril), biotin, thioctic acid, and sodium dimercaptosuccinate. It is also an important raw material for the synthesis of cysteine, hormonal agents, industrial disinfectants, and the synthesis of sulfuric acid.

In addition to being used as an intermediate for Cefivitril, thioglycolic acid is widely used as a curling agent, depilatory agent, low-toxicity or non-toxic PVC stabilizer, metal surface treatment agent, and as an initiator, accelerator, and chain transfer agent in polymerization reactions.

It is a sensitive reagent for iron, molybdenum, silver, and tin. Its ammonium and sodium salts are used as cold-wave curling agents, and its calcium salt is used as a depilatory agent.
