Crotonic acid is an unsaturated fatty acid. Its molecule contains double bonds and carboxyl groups, thus having strong reactivity. It has various uses in industry, mainly for the preparation of various resins, fungicides, surface coatings, plasticizers and pharmaceuticals. Its most important use is as a raw material for polyvinyl acetate coatings. In addition, vinyl acetate-crotonic acid copolymers can be used as hot-melt adhesives for book binding, as well as coatings for wallpaper, adhesives for paper and laminates, and components of film developers and electrostatic copying fluids. Crotonic acid series products: Crotonamide: obtained by the reaction of crotonic acid or its acyl chloride with ammonia. Crotonanilide: prepared by the reaction of crotonyl chloride or crotonic anhydride with aniline, and used in insecticides. Crotonic anhydride: obtained by the reaction of crotonyl chloride with sodium crotonate, and can also be formed by the reaction of crotonic acid with acetic anhydride or ketene, used in the preparation of crotonic acid cellulose and its derivatives. Crotonyl chloride: obtained by the action of crotonic acid with carbon trichloride, phosphorus pentachloride, benzoyl chloride or thionyl chloride, etc., used in the preparation of crotonic acid esters and their derivatives. Important crotonic acid esters include methyl crotonate, ethyl crotonate, n-butyl crotonate, vinyl crotonate, and allyl crotonate. The amyl ester, geranyl ester, 2-methylallyl ester and 2-ethylhexyl ester of crotonic acid are all used in perfumes, and their benzyl ester, cyanomethyl ester and trimethylene glycol ester are insecticides. Peroxycrotonic acid is a catalyst for the polymerization of vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride. Crotonic acid is also used as a softener for synthetic rubber.
