Aluminum sec-Butoxide (CAS 2269-22-9) is a colorless to pale yellow viscous liquid with a density of 0.96 g/cm³, a boiling point of 200–206°C at 30 mmHg, and a flash point of 27.8°C. It is readily soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol, isopropanol, and toluene. This compound is highly reactive and decomposes rapidly upon contact with water to form aluminum hydroxide and sec-butanol. It must be stored in a tightly sealed container in a cool, dry environment, away from oxidizing agents, acids, and moisture. Its core application value is reflected in the following areas:
Catalysis: As a highly effective Lewis acid catalyst, it delivers exceptional performance in organic synthesis, particularly in the synthesis of chiral pharmaceutical intermediates, significantly enhancing reaction selectivity and yield.
Industrial Additives: It serves as a gelling agent in inks and paints to enhance system stability; is used in the preparation of waterproofing agents for textiles to improve material weatherability; and also acts as a raw material for aluminum complex greases.
Pharmaceuticals and Vaccines: In the pharmaceutical industry, it functions as a stabilizer to prevent the degradation of active ingredients. In vaccine production, it is utilized as an antigen protein adsorbent to enhance immunogenicity.
Comparison with Competitor Product Aluminum Isopropoxide
Compared to aluminum isopropoxide, aluminum sec-butoxide exhibits significant differences in performance and application:
Stability and Storage: Aluminum isopropoxide is a white hygroscopic solid that offers convenience in storage and transportation at a lower cost. In contrast, aluminum sec-butoxide is highly susceptible to hydrolysis and requires sealed storage under argon protection, leading to stringent storage conditions and higher costs.
Application Scenarios: Aluminum isopropoxide is widely used as a polymerization catalyst, lubricant thickener, and pharmaceutical intermediate. Aluminum sec-butoxide, however, is primarily applied in high-end catalysis, fine chemicals, and biomedical fields, such as the preparation of nano-alumina hydrosol and the synthesis of rare-earth-doped materials.
Reactivity: Both compounds act as strong reducing agents, but aluminum sec-butoxide demonstrates higher efficiency in aldehyde/ketone reduction and oxidation reactions, making it suitable for small-scale laboratory applications requiring high purity.
